There's an in-game acknowledgment that the Guardians of the Galaxy are a team. However, the game will insist that the player only play as Star-Lord, since he is the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy. So no Star-Lord change.
As the game developed, thought was given to letting players roam through the characters. Eidos Montreal, the developers of the game, chose not to let the player change characters.

This news was revealed shortly after the game was announced. Jean-François Dugas, Senior Creative Director of Guardians of the Galaxy, said in an interview with IGN:
“We started discussing different opportunities like multiplayer or co-op. But we were really looking at what Guardians of the Galaxy is, and it's all about those characters. It's about colorful personalities that clash and sometimes get along. It is a mixture of all these things, their qualities, their faults. And we thought, “It would be really awesome if you could be one of the Guardians and put yourself in the center of it all to be surrounded by these characters. And that's how it happened. »
For this reason, the game is more about tactics than direct action. The developers wanted players to think about Guardians' actions and the consequences of each situation. It is a very strategic game.
