If there is one element that Motive Studios had to take care of in Dead Space Remake, it is the USG Ishimura. Macabre theater of the adventures of Isaac Clarke, he is a character in his own right as he participates in the scary atmosphere of the game. In a post published on the official site, the developers explain how they brought the mythical surface breaker. “Personally, I think the Ishimura is as legendary in the world of video games as the Nostromo of Alien in the world of cinema”, affirms Roy Tuazon, associate artistic director. “In a way, the Ishimura is the enemy, because a large part of the ship is incredibly dangerous, underlines for his part Jo Berry, scriptwriter of senior game. But it is also the only way for Isaac to get rid of the necromorphs."
To make it even more terrifying, the teams decided to redesign the ship from the ground up. also had to make sure that this content corresponded to the progress of the person who is playing, underlines David Robillard, technical manager of the project.Fortunately, in recent years, Frostbite has made several improvements to its streaming solution and we have been able to take advantage of them. " Even if their quality was not optimal, Motive Studios was able to rely on the original files which served as a guide.
“We had to take the play spaces, bring them together, then integrate everything into a 3D ship, specifies Roy Tuazon. Then, we had to move certain areas to make it all coherent. We also had to modify the size certain areas, adding connecting corridors, that sort of thing. But we didn't just do that to add things. Everything we did, we did because it made sense and because it made sense." Catherine Stewart, lead level designer, adds that some areas have been enlarged to fit new gameplay mechanics, making particular reference to the zero-gravity system.
"For example, in the original game, we take a gondola from one end of the ship to the other, and we can see this beautiful environment around us, explains Roy Tuazon. But in our version, we can take the gondola from 'end to end, activating zero-gravity, then returning without the gondola. Now you can explore this new area that used to be just a scary dark space when looking down."
Motive Studios has also endeavored to expand the areas already present, like the empty room in which one enters just to open a door. In Dead Space Remake, the developers have made it a customs area, which involves the addition of security warnings, customs declarations, scan posts and others. “We were able to take places or brands from the extended universe of Dead Space and implant them in the Ishimura in the form of advertisements, posters, stuff like that, underlines the guy. Now, when you play the game , you see places mentioned in Dead Space 2, for example. These little details help to unify the universe of the game even more. And all these little narrative elements make the ship feel like a living world."
Finally, the teams - and they will certainly not say the opposite - assure anxiety when they explore the new USG Ishimura. “I think the worst thing is to go to the belly of the beast, to the engine room or the drilling deck, swears the associate artistic director. There is this industrial atmosphere, everything is so cramped. It's dark, cluttered, you see shapes everywhere. You think it's a necromorph, but it's just a machine. And every time, I think I know what's going on, I know what's going on, and bam! I just gained another gray hair."
We hope that all these beautiful promises will be kept in the final version of the game which, we remind you, will arrive on January 27, 2023 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5 and PC.
