With any new game there is always the fear that it will pay to win. This means players can spend real money to progress through the game, creating a disparity between players who can spend real money and those who cannot or choose not to.
With the upcoming release of New World, you might be wondering if the MMO is going to pay to win. The answer is no, at least at launch. Amazon has made it clear that they don't want to make a paid game and are listening to player feedback.

New World will, however, launch with microtransactions. Amazon does not intend to add character or experience bonuses that players can purchase. Instead, New World microtransactions will be cosmetic. They want to give players more options when it comes to their character visuals as well as weapons and armor.
New World creative director David Verfaillie said in an interview with Eurogamer that “We certainly heard the feedback from players. Our goal is that we don't want it to be a pay-to-win experience. The focus is on cosmetics: that's all we're going to do at launch. Verfaillie also said there is room for quality-of-life improvements that won't turn into a pay-to-win model.
Some players call this model a “pay for convenience” instead. With this kind of model, New World might give the player such troublesome problems that they will be more tempted to pay real money to progress. Only time will tell how microtransactions will develop in the New World, but at least at launch they will be cosmetic only.
