James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) appointed head of DC Studios, time for change?

Dwayne Johnson warned us well in advance of the release of Black Adam: things are going to change for the DC Extended Universe, and he was right the guy. In an article posted by The Hollywood Reporter where it is also explained that the hierarchy of powers will be shaken up, we learn that James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking the helm of DC Films together, renamed DC Studios at the same time (we will appreciate the foot call to Marvel). Since the merger between Warner Bros and Discovery, but also the (forced) departure of Walter Hamada a few weeks ago, there is a sense of renewal within the DC Extended Universe. By placing the two men at the head of this new entity, Warner Bros wishes to establish a fixed editorial line, in order to develop DC films in cinemas as in TV series in one and the same direction. A kind of Kevin Feige with DCEU sauce that has always been missing from the enemy stable of Marvel.

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) appointed head of DC Studios, time for change?

The article, validated in the process by James Gunn in person on Twitter, proves that the filmmaker has come a long way from Warner and DC since his time to produce the soft reboot of The Suicide Squad and launch the Peacemaker series, two successes reviews that have given Warner hope that it can make up for 10 years of false starts. We remember that if James Gunn left to have fun at DC, it was because Disney had expelled him from its ranks following old controversial tweets which had been unearthed just after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. In the midst of controversy, James Gunn had found refuge at Warner and DC who had given him carte blanche to relaunch the franchise The Suicide Squad.

Still, in the sharing of tasks, James Gunn will take care of the creative part of DC Studios, while Peter Safran will have more of a business role, knowing that it is David Zaslav who will remain their N+1 in decisions. sort of final. This means that Marvel Studios won't be seeing James Gunn back in its ranks anytime soon to direct a new MCU film, and there's a good chance the firm led by Kevin Feige will sever ties following this change in status. On social networks, the announcement of the departure of James Gunn for the DCEU is considered for some as a betrayal, while others recall that the productions put in a box by the latter have never really been extraordinary. In any case, this announcement was made a few hours after the publication of the special Christmas episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, received very coldly by fans of the MCU…

Before the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in 2023, we will be entitled to a special Christmas episode on Disney +, shot elsewhere at the same time as the film.
