Market speculation about the new Magic: The Gathering cards from Core Set 2021 has already begun and there's a lot to talk about.
The set focuses on the Teferi, Master of Time planeswalker, which has risen in price like no other recent standard card. A few core reprints from older Magic eras have also gained popularity. But that doesn't mean much unless these cards show good results in the current metas.
If you're looking to pick up some of the new cards in Core Set 2021, take a look at our list of the most expensive MtG cards in this new expansion. Note that the prices listed correspond to the publication date of this article: June 24, 2020.
Massacre Worm
- Online Price: $2,25
- Paper Price: $7,47
This reprint of Mirrodin Besieged has solid potential as a sideboard against standard aggro decks, and it will also see play in Commander format.
The price is still holding up quite well due to its popularity and a general lack of supply. The current price is perfect for this new reprint, while the original print remains around $15.
Usually, old cards have the potential to stay valuable for a long time, so it's a pretty safe investment. There are no prices for the alternate art yet, but they should be around $10 each.
Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose
- Online Price: $9,00
- Paper Price: $8,49
In addition to the main Core Set 2021 expansion, Wizards of the Coast will release an additional Jumpstart set on July 17.
This set will include a reprint of Exquisite Blood, an enchantment from the restored Avacyn set. It synergizes perfectly with Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, a new card from Core Set 2021.
This deadly combo will be huge in both Commander and Eternal formats, such as Heirloom and Vintage, driving up the prices on Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose. However, don't expect prices to go too high; Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose will have no impact on Standard or Pioneer.
Chromatic orrery
- Online Price: $7,00
- Paper Price: $10,43
While Chromatic Orrery looks very exciting - it's the only Artifact in MtG that yields this much mana, due to its high initial price of 7 mana - it probably won't see as much play in constructed formats.
Of course, there will be demand while ordering, so that should keep the price at somewhat acceptable levels. The most likely threshold is around $5 per card.
This means you have to wait for the price to drop and then you can start buying it for future trades.
Liliana, Waker of the Dead
- Online Price: $10,00
- Paper Price: $10,56
None of the new Core Set 2021 planeswalkers – with the exception of Teferi, Master of Time – have been so impressive. The same goes for this new version of Liliana of the Veil, though she's still a favorite of many Magic players.
Liliana, Waker of the Dead is a solid card, so it should keep its price around $10. But if it works less than expected, it should drop to around $5-7 per card.
Since Liliana of the Veil is available as a modern version, players will never choose a more expensive Liliana, Waker of the Dead, so this one will only see play as standard, pioneer, and commander.
Azusa, lost but searching
- Online Price: $2,00
- Paper Price: $11,69
In the modern version, only an Amulet Titan deck would want to play Azusa, Lost but Seeking, which is a reprint in Core Set 2021.
There are plenty of commander lists that include Azusa, but neither standard players nor pioneers will want to pay more than $10 for a card that has so much competition in those two formats.
This means that the Core Set 2021 reprint will sit at exactly this range, and those wishing to purchase collectible prints should watch either an original copy of Champions of Kamigawa or an alternate Core Set 2021 promo, which now sits at about $40 a piece. .
elder gargaroth
- Online Price: $10,00
- Paper Price: $11,74
This card has been compared to the Questing Beast of Throne of Eldraine, but unlike the Questing Beast, Elder Gargaroth haste.
This means that Brother Gargaroth can go in two directions. If it turns out to be a great standard card, the price will slowly increase to around $15. But if it shows no significant results, it will go down to around $4-5 – or even less.
Fiery Emancipation
- Online Price: $8,00
- Paper Price: $12,49
Red Obosh decks have proven to be disgustingly powerful as standard, and it looks like Fiery Emancipation is going to rival the companion Obosh for a spot in aggro red decks.
Commander players will surely use it to some extent, which could significantly increase its price. It's a bit of a gamble, though, and no one knows if red players will want to pay 6 mana for such a powerful effect.
Terror of the Peaks
- Online Price: $13,00
- Paper Price: $13,94
This new dragon is incredibly powerful and is much better than Baneslayer Angel, another 5 mana mythic flyer from Core Set 2021.
Terror of the Peaks can be played in all formats, including Commander. Its combo possibilities are huge, and overall it's just a very solid card no matter how you look at it.
The current price of the card is stable and will most likely climb until it reaches one or two higher level decks. It's a relatively safe buy at this point, which may actually turn out to be a great long-term investment.
Ugin, the spiritual dragon
- Online Price: $3,00
- Paper Price: $29,94
This card is another core reprint in Core Set 2021, this time from Fate Reforged. Ugin was priced at around $40 for an original print, which means the normal price for a reprint should be around $20 – or even less.
The current price is high due to the hype surrounding the card. Everyone wants to play Ugin, the Spirit Dragon in their standard ramp game, but a price drop is inevitable.
So expect Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, to end up around $15-$20.
Grim Tutor
- Online Price: $6,50
- Paper Price: $29,97
Grim Tutor's original print of the Portal set is valued at $200 a card, which is a perfectly decent price for old and vintage players.
The high price of the original is dictated by its extremely limited print run, which shouldn't be the case for this Core Set 2021 reprint.
I thought the alternate art versions would still be quite expensive, if you go for the standard print just expect it to drop to $20 or less.
Teferi, master of time
- Online Price: $31,00
- Paper Price: $44,40
The two previous versions of the Teferi planeswalker – Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Teferi, Time Raveler – were extremely popular across all build formats. But even then, Teferi, Time Raveler has stabilized at $15 per card and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria is hovering around $25 per card.
This means that Teferi, Master of Time will end up somewhere in between, maybe around $20. However, if the passive ability proves popular, the price is very likely to go up.
