The sequel to the highly acclaimed Modern Horizons set, designed specifically for Modern and Eternal formats, is live now at Magic Online. The print set will be released on June 18, which isn't that far off.

As expected, Modern Horizons 2 is a bundle of great power and value, including three new planeswalkers, terrain reprints, strong Squirrel and Merfolk tribal support, and plenty of other great features.

Currently, the Magic: The Gathering market is in a serious shake-up, so it's time to review some of the most expensive cards in Modern Horizons 2.

Note that the prices displayed correspond to the publication date of this article: June 03, 2021.

Chatterfang, General Squirrel

  • Regular art price: $37,29
  • Borderless Art Price: $49,99

This card started very low during spoiler season at around $10 a card. But once players looked beyond the "squirrel" label and started building decks with it, that's when the price started to skyrocket.

Chatterfang can become a very useful token generator with additional capabilities, which will cause a huge demand in commander format. He can easily support the Green Token archetype with the Deranged Hermit and Deep Forest Hermit in play.

However, that kind of hype doesn't extend to the modern format, where there isn't much room for the Squirrels tribal deck. There is still a slight indication that Chatterfang might increase in price.

Dauthi March of the Void

  • Regular Art Price: $40,00
  • Extended Art Price: $42,99

Dauthi Voidwalker is undoubtedly a very powerful card, but it also has some drawbacks that can be easily overlooked.

Right now it is getting love from both Commander and modern gamers. The advantages are obvious: nearly unblockable due to Shadow's ability, hates opponent's graveyard, and provides card advantage. What's not to like?

But he can also easily die to something like Fatal Push, and maybe be revived by Lurrus of the Dream Den for a turn or two. But that's not enough to justify the $40 price tag, so expect it to drop to around $25 a piece in the secondary market.

Solitude

  • Regular Art Price: $42,54
  • Borderless Art Price: $59,99

The Evoke card cycle in Modern Horizons 2 is a real winner. Loneliness is only one piece, but it is truly far-reaching and will change the landscape of the modern format, and perhaps other eternal formats as well.

It was once proclaimed as the "Strength of Plowshares", referring to the removal spell of Swords into Plowshares, but with the uncontrollable casting cost of the infamous Force of Will. If you add the Instant spell to the combo, you get something very dangerous.

The current price seems perfectly balanced for such a solid yet new card. If not banned, it could see steady growth over the years.

Hearth and Home Sword

  • Regular Art Price: $44,92
  • Borderless Art Price: $65,57

The new cycle of swords in Modern Horizons 2 is getting a lot of support from the EDH crowd. Sword of Hearth and Home is a very good ramp card with format-relevant color protection, as well as a very useful blinking effect.

The old cycle of swords, with Sword of Feast and Famine being the leader, is even better, but that doesn't mean commander players won't find another slot for this new card.

However, there isn't a lot of hype among modern gamers, so Sword of Feast and Famine may not have as solid growth as expected. The current price is well adjusted, unless it drops a little in the next few months.

Grist, the tide of hunger

  • Regular Art Price: $49,99
  • Borderless Art Price: $56,27

Grist is both a planeswalker and a creature that can be used as a commander. Such a combination is intended to work well in various formats, but no one knows for sure how well it actually works.

This creates a feeling of uncertainty in the market. Commander players will push it as much as they can, but its price will increase if it turns out to be just a fancy card with questionable value.

As this is a brand new map that requires extensive testing, there is no definitive answer as to the best strategy. Just wait to see how Grist performs in different formats before prices settle.

Despicable Hierarch

  • Regular Art Price: $54,99
  • Sketch Price: $84,99

Jund players must have been thrilled when this card was revealed. It's an instant staple that will be played as much in the modern as its Noble Hierarch predecessor.

Since this is the very first impression of Ignoble Hierarch, it can easily maintain its current price, and might even increase a bit in the coming months. But if Wizards of the Coast decides to reprint it as much as they chose to do with Noble Hierarch, then the price will inevitably drop as much.

For now, it's a great investment, and probably the safest of all of Modern Horzions 2.

Verdant Catacombs

  • Regular Art Price: $54,99
  • Extended Art Price: $86,62

The five Enemy Salvage Lands from the original Zendikar set make a return in Modern Horizons 2. Verdant Catacombs, Burning Tarn, and Misty Rainforest are all priced at $50+, while Arid Mesa and Marsh Flats are $30+.

These lands are obviously very expensive but nevertheless valuable. The various arts will retain their high price, while regular print runs can run around $40-50 due to the reprint factor, and then increase over time, just like they did with Modern Masters 2017.

Investing in these lands upon release may be a good deal at the current price, but it will take the market a few months to assess the true prices of these newly reprinted fetches.

Subtlety

  • Regular Art Price: $58,72
  • Borderless Art Price: $79,99

Force of Negation from the first set of Modern Horizons was a real hit. While subtlety isn't as good, it still has some value in control decks that want to get rid of an aggressive first creature or planeswalker.

The current price is going up due to the cost of manless casting, but once people realize that this effect isn't as strong as it looks, then the price will most likely come down.

It should be around the same price range as Solitude, around $40-45 per card, or even less.

Cabal Chests

  • Regular Art Price: $60,75
  • Borderless Art Price: $79,99

Here's another great value reprint, but this time from the Torment set. It's a huge commander card, which was priced at almost $100, but with the current version of Modern Horizons 2, it's dropped to $60.

Everything indicates that the fall will continue, so it is not advisable to buy this now. Wait until prices stabilize, and then it would be wise to get them in the $30-40 range as a long-term investment.

Since cards like these stand the test of time, they will increase in value over the next few years unless Wizards of the Coast decides to reprint them again, which is doubtful.

Pain

  • Regular Art Price: $69,92
  • Borderless Art Price: $84,99

As is the case with Solitude and Subtlety, this card will drop in price upon release, then slowly increase in price over time.

Mourning will be played in most Eternal formats, but it looks like the Commander crowd isn't particularly large on this one. This could be an indication of an even steeper drop once the card hits the secondary market.

But it could work exceptionally well in modern and legacy versions, and if it does, the price will correct itself. The question remains: how strong will this correction be?

Ragavan, Agile Thief

  • Regular art price: $79,94
  • Borderless Art Price: $99,99

Ragavan is essentially the thief of the rich but for one mana, which is a strong contender for best new red card in Modern Horizons 2.

Everyone loves this card in all legal formats. This is why the prices have skyrocketed and there is no indication of a decline.

EDH players are already banking on it being one of the best commander red cards. This should keep its value high throughout the release weekend and beyond.
