Each new generation of PlayStation has its Slim model. A practice to which Sony Interactive Entertainment has accustomed us since the PS2 era and which has been repeated systematically. The PS5 will obviously not budge and according to some insiders, the PS5 Slim would have a removable Blu-ray drive. It is Tom Henderson, journalist who has his backstage inputs, who makes it known in an article posted to Insider Gaming, revealing that Sony is considering making production savings. Inevitably, with the shortage linked to the pandemic; the Japanese manufacturer has been looking for effective ways to avoid finding itself in the same situation for two years now. Currently, the PS5 is sold in two versions: a version with a built-in Blu-ray disc player and another in a digital edition, unable to read discs. The idea is to remove these two models to focus on one, to which it would be possible to graft an external reader. In practice, this means that we could end up with a machine sold alone (or in a bundle with this removable drive), but above all, it will be possible to buy the drive individually, which will facilitate repairs in case of failure.
In the information relayed by Tom Hendersen, it is also specified that this removable reader was designed to be attached directly to the machine, without spoiling its aesthetics, and without giving the feeling that it is a reader of external disks. Another important detail: the chassis of the new PS5 called "Slim" has also been completely redesigned, the idea being to offer a smaller, thinner and lighter console. The release of this new PS5 would be scheduled for fiscal year 2023 and Sony would have already planned to produce 18.5 million of this new PS5. We recall that 21.7 million PS5 have been sold since its release in November 2020, figures stopped in June 2022.
