You'll probably have to backtrack if you need to get your hands on bird feathers in Skyward Sword HD. Birds only have two spawn points and getting your hands on the feathers can be a difficult process.

Skyward Sword Bird Feather | How to Get the Bug Net
You need a Bug Net to get Bird Feathers, so head to Beedle's Shop.
Although the village children tell you about Beedle right away, you can't access his shop until you get the Slingshot in Faron Woods. Once you're back in Skyloft and have a few hundred rupees, hit Beedle's bell with a projectile and climb aboard.
He has the Bug Net for sale right away, so you can buy it and return to Faron Woods.

Pick the Forest Bird Statue when you return to Faron Woods and you'll come across a flock of birds right next to it.
Actually getting a bird feather is a slight pain, though. Birds fly away at the slightest movement, so your net must be perfectly oriented.
Tilt the right stick (or your Joy-Con if using motion control) to the right and slightly down, so the net is facing you. Slowly walk towards a bird until your net is about to touch it, then quickly move the stick (or Joy-Con) to the side.
You should catch a feather in the process.
If you miss or want to grab a second and third feather, leave the area and come back for the birds to respawn. The quickest way is to take the log shortcut to the right of the bird statue (not the one right next to it) and down the sand hill. Run back and the birds should reappear in the clearing.
A herd also appears on the grounds of the Sealed Temple.

If you were messing around and grabbed a bird feather by accident, you can use them to upgrade your holy shield, which you can get from the bazaar after initially defeating the prisoners. Visit the scrap shop in the bazaar to upgrade the shield.

Skyward Sword Bird Feather | How to get the blue bird feather
Bluebird feathers come (surprise!) from bluebirds. These spawn randomly in Faron Woods or the Sealed Temple. You can also earn a Bluebird Feather on Bamboo Island by getting 26 or more cups in the challenge there, and the Moonlit Merchant has a Blue Feather for sale for 300 Rupees.
