After being the subject of a number of rumours, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor was made official last week as part of Star Wars Celebration 2022. The opportunity for Stig Asmussen, the director of the game, to come back to the interest in releasing the game on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5 and PC, with Respawn Entertainment having decided to turn its back on Xbox One and PS4. "I think the difference is mostly in ray-tracing or lighting, he explained in an interview. We have the ability to play with light in real time to a degree which surpasses anything we have produced so far. As it is in real time, we are able to immediately see the changes we are making in lighting. Which means we have more time to fine-tune , iterate more, and get results with a more cinematic dimension."
Before adding: "In addition, there are these super fast discs which allow us to quickly load a lot of content. I have always worked on games which do not display loading screens. The fact that these consoles have a fast storage system has made things a lot easier. Those are probably the two main benefits. I don't forget that the haptic features of the PS5 [via the DualSense, editor's note] on which we are in the process of to work." Even if he does not state it openly, one can imagine that the wish of Stig Asmussen and his teams was to offer a Star Wars: Jedi Survivor more impressive than its predecessor on a technical level, something that he would not have arguably not been possible had they had to account for Xbox One and PS4, even though their respective installed base is currently larger.
That said, given that the game will not arrive before 2023 - the year from which the shortage of electronic components should be much less strong according to many analysts - Respawn Entertainment's bet could pay off.
