Tonight's State of Play was the opportunity to discover a first trailer for The Callisto Protocol, the new survival horror from Glen Schofield, who is none other than the creator of Dead Space. Lasting 2 minutes, the video highlights all that made the fame of the Visceral Games series, namely a mastery of lighting, a moist atmosphere, and above all, bloodthirsty creatures. "The Callisto Protocol takes place in 2320, on the dead moon of Jupiter, Callisto, explains the one who is also the boss of the studio Striking Distance. The game tells the story of Jacob Lee, detained in the Black Iron prison, and his fight to stay alive after a mysterious infection throws the moon into chaos. As the guards and inmates transform into monstrous creatures called Biophages, Jacob must struggle to survive the horrors of Black Iron and shed light on the dark secrets that the United Jupiter Company hides."
He adds, "Creating terror in games is harder than you think. The team relied on a process we call 'Horror Science' to give players unforgettable cold sweats and bring the universe of The Callisto Protocol to life. It's all about atmosphere, tension, violence, vulnerability and humanity. Cleverly balanced, these elements form the perfect cocktail to make players shiver... and their fear for their lives." By his own admission, he and his teams spent a huge amount of time working on the light.
“We also exploit all the possibilities offered by the 3D audio of the PS5 and we rely on acoustic ray tracing, diffraction and redirection of sound to immerse players in the heart of the universe, he adds for make it clear that the sound design has also been the subject of special care. From the monstrous sounds of the Biophages which spread along endless dark corridors to the incessant noise of malfunctioning machines, the sound environment is essential to give players the feeling trapped, alone and isolated."
Regarding the combat system, Glen Schofield indicates that it will be necessary to have strong nerves both in melee and at a distance. "We've designed a strategic combat system that forces players into direct contact with our fearsome creatures. Seamlessly transition from melee to ranged combat using the GRP, a one-of-a-kind gravitational weapon. Used By the Black Iron Wardens to subdue the prison population, this weapon will allow Jacob to be creative in his confrontations with the Biophages. Slow down an enemy that is charging towards you or use the environment to your advantage and send a Biophage into the blades of a turbine to get you out of a desperate situation." Exploration will also have a say, since Jacob (played by actor Josh Duhamel) will have to count his ammunition and therefore search every corner to get his hands on all kinds of resources.
Finally, The Callisto Protocol will land on December 2 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5 and PC.
