Valheim Map Markers: How to Ping and Mark Locations

Placing Valheim map markers is not something the game tells you how to do. While there are plenty of in-game tutorials to get you started, some systems, like repairing your tools and weapons, are a bit vague. When you come across places of interest, such as excavations, burial chambers, troll caves, and copper deposits, you'll probably want to mark them so you can return to them later.

Your mini-map can be seen in the top right corner, and it shows your immediate area, along with the wind direction indicated by a white arrow. But that only gives you a very small view of the seed of the world. We want a broader view.

Valheim has a nifty ping system, which highlights areas important to you and other players with a blue bubble. With the overworld graphic facing up, hover over an area and press the middle mouse button.

A blue bubble will appear as a ping. It will stay active for about 8-10 seconds before it disappears. If you close the map, you'll see blue text with your character's name and "ping" appear in the direction you pointed.

However, this type of flag only lasts a short time, quickly disappearing and leaving no trace. If you want something more permanent, you'll want to use markers.

With the world map open, look to the bottom right. You will see a column with five icons. There's an octagonal button on the left that you can click to let other players see things you've reported.

Click on one of the icons in the column, then double-click anywhere on the map to place the icon. A text box will appear in the middle bottom of the overworld graphic. Here you can type whatever you want to name the location, but it should probably be something that describes what's there, like "base", "campfire", or "watch out, troll!" »

To delete a marker, simply hover over it and right-click.

Note that these symbols will only appear on the minimap when you approach them. There are no large directional indicators or waypoints directing you to them, so you'll need to use a combination of maps to find them.

That's all you need to know to place Valheim's map markers and use the ping system. Now that you know how to do it, you won't lose track of your base or important places of interest.
