The clay shards are a drop of Granilems, a golem type enemy. These shards can be used for a variety of crafting purposes, but they're only dropped by that enemy type (and a specific giant zeugal called a Flamewrecker), so you might miss out if you're not fighting enough Granilems on your path. through the main story.
Granilems can be found both on the Translida Highway and in the Razum Quarry Dungeon, both located in Menancia. It seems, however, that the Granilems will only start appearing on Translida Highway after clearing the Razum Quarry dungeon. If you're looking to grind up some clay shards quickly, our recommendation is to skip the farm for them on the Translida Highway.

For those unfamiliar, skip-farming involves traveling to a location, obtaining a specific resource nearby, then quickly returning to the same location to force the resource to respawn. In this case, we will go to the fast travel point next to the campfire on the Translida highway. There is a single Granilem just next to the campsite to the northwest. Normally, skipping a single enemy spawn wouldn't be worth it. But with the proximity of this Granilem, it ends up being quite good.
Before you start farming clay shards, you'll want to consider equipping a few different accessories. If you picked up the first Lucky Bangle while going through Bregon's quest in Cyslodia, now would be the time to put it on someone. Likewise, if you have tier two or higher attachments with the Drop Rate effect, equipping them would also make farming much faster.
