Made official in 2014, Dead Island 2 was supposed to be released in the spring of 2015, knowing that at the time, the game was in development at Yager Development. However, in April 2015, some rumors suggest that the marketing of the game could be postponed. Deep Silver decides to speak a week later to confirm the news. "We always set ourselves a goal with Dead Island 2: to create a sequel capable of taking the series to the next level. A game including everything our fans love about Dead Island - multiple playable characters, co-op, transforming a paradise into a real zombie butchery - with the added bonus of even more content and combat options. And we wanted to have it all ready for this spring. game in 2016", he explained in particular.
The following summer, the publisher let it be known that the project had been withdrawn from Yager Development and that it was looking for a new partner. “Our team is made up of the best creatives and talented programmers who all share a common identity, explained Timo Ullman, the boss of the studio. They worked with enthusiasm to allow Dead Island 2 to take a step forward in terms of quality. However, Yager and Deep Silver no longer have the same vision on the project, which led to this decision." It is finally Sumo Digital which recovers the project as announced by Deep Silver in March 2016.

Then follows a period during which Deep Silver, then THQ Nordic (which bought the parent company Koch Media in 2018) ensures that Dead Island 2 is still in development. Moreover, in 2019, we learn that Dambuster Studios is now in charge of the project. In short, it continues to work underwater, which leads us to gamescom 2022 where a new date is announced: February 3, 2023. Fans thought they were done with these adventures, but it was without counting on an ultimate twist that has taken place in recent hours. Indeed, Deep Silver announced via Twitter that the marketing of the game was postponed to April 28, 2023. A postponement of twelve weeks therefore which will allow the teams to refine the last elements.
To reassure the community, the publisher points out that the development of the game has entered its final stretch and that the developers simply want to ensure that the result lives up to the expectations raised over the past eight years. And to make the pill easier to swallow, we are promised a new gameplay trailer for December 6th. Dead Island 2 is expected on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and PC.
