Silent Hill: no, Christophe Gans' film will not be released in 2023, he explains why

On the occasion of the cinema re-release of Le Pacte des Loups in its long version and restored in 4K, we had the immense pleasure of being able to interview its director Christophe Gans, to whom we also owe Crying Freeman, Silent Hill and Beauty & the Beast (2014). If we go back a lot to the restoration of the Pact of the Wolves, which remains its biggest success to date (5.2 million spectators), its references to Shaw Brothers films, to the video game with Ivy's sword in SoulCalibur, we also talked about his next projects. Two are currently in the works, namely a new Silent Hill, and an adaptation of Project Zero (also known as Fatal Frame in the United States). Christophe Gans had already announced it to Allociné in 2020 on the occasion of the Fantastic Film festival, but since then no news. However, we have heard and read in recent days that his film will arrive in 2023, which seemed implausible to us given that filming has not even started. So we put the question to Christophe Gans, who answered us bluntly:

In fact, what happens is that... And we know it, it's in the thing... The franchise (Silent Hill, editor's note) is going to be relaunched in terms of video games, and therefore the film will become part of a global policy. I believe that on a forum, someone deduced that and he is absolutely right; in other words, the film is indeed part of a whole. I'm not saying that it was Konami who asked us to make a new film, it just so happens that a few months before the start of the pandemic, we are at the beginning of 2020, with Victor Hadida, following the death of Samuel (Hadida, his big brother editor's note), we went through all the rights that Samuel had acquired and we said to ourselves... We have the Fatal Frame franchise and the Silent Hill license, we have to do something about it.

In addition, the market, the way it is reorganizing today, tends to push us in this direction. Because aside from the Marvel movies, the best-selling movies so far this year, I'm not going to tell anyone, are Uncharted and Sonic 2. Which means video game franchises have a real foundation, because somewhere, and it's quite easy to understand, they combine two audiences: both the video game audience and the cinema audience. And today, the audience tends to shrink following the shock of the pandemic. So, we say to ourselves that it's better to have two audiences with you than just one...

We now know that the original director from Antibes took advantage of the various confinements to write the script for his two films. The Silent Hill project is almost finished and Christophe Gans will get down to casting in the coming weeks. What he meant by 2023 is undoubtedly the arrival of the first games (according to leaks and rumors, Konami has commissioned several studios to relaunch the franchise), while the filming of the new film by Christophe Gans will turn probably in 2023... Do not hesitate to consult the interview in its entirety, there are other crisp anecdotes.

For people who still doubt it (not many people I think), Christophe Gans confirms the return of game(s) SILENT HILL, in addition to his film in preparation. The script is ready, they are looking for the actors and no, the film will not be released in 2023.
