The Nintendo Direct Mini was an opportunity to discover a new gameplay video of Sonic Frontiers which, unfortunately, is not really likely to reassure some fans. Indeed, the open world remains desperately empty even if the developers assure that it will be populated by creatures (Soldier, Cyclone, Striker, Carapace, Bubble among others) that the supersonic hedgehog will meet for the very first time. On the plus side though: Starfall Islands will house access to cyberspace where purists will find classic high-speed linear platforming levels. "Cyberspace challenges allow you to obtain unit keys necessary for the progression of the adventure", it is specified in the press release. As you might expect, you will first have to "solve puzzles and complete challenges to win portal mechanisms and access cyberspace."
For the rest, we are promised "high-speed open-area gameplay offering various activities that can be accessed anywhere on the island, at any time. It will be possible to take part in breathtaking battles, puzzles, side quests, levels in cyberspace and conversations in any order, for any playstyle." On the combat side, "players can use various key combinations to combine dodges, parries, counters", knowing that Sonic Frontiers will have an auto mode to slam combos by pressing only one key. Note that Sonic will be able to count on a new mechanic, the Run-loop, which “will allow him to surround enemies, objects and the environment to create various effects and reveal the secrets of Starfall Islands.”
Finally, two control styles will be possible at the start of the adventure: Action for beginners wishing to benefit from more precision in the platforming phases, and Speed for fans already experienced in the supersonic speed of the hero. We remind you that the release of Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for this year on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5 and PS4.
