When trying to connect to a server, from time to time, you will encounter the infamous server_error code that all gamers dread. It's not the end of the world, but it's (temporarily) the end of your matchmaking. Read below see what you should do when you encounter this error before your next drop.

We have good news and bad news. The good news is that you didn't do anything wrong and you're still our favorite player. Sometimes you just run into a problem and nothing can be done! The bad news? Well... there's no official fix you can do on your end because this error is almost always caused by something on the server side.

This error code often appears when Fortnite servers are under severe stress due to a sudden influx of players or unscheduled maintenance interfering with matchmaking. What usually happens is that your connection sends data and Fortnite's servers have a problem answering and/or responding to it. It's possible that your connection is faulty, but when it does, you'll almost certainly encounter a different error code.

That said, there are still a few things to do before trying again. Two, in fact! We list them below.

  • Check Server Status: Epic Games provides us with this nice website that tells you if there are currently any issues with the servers. If anything other than All Systems Working is displayed here, it suggests you might be having trouble joining a match. Green means go!

  • Check your connection: The link to check your connection takes you through a simple speed test to make sure you're uploading and downloading at the correct speeds. If you notice that traffic to your device is much slower than average, try to determine the cause.

Before you go, here's a helpful note. You will find that you encounter this error code most often after removing new patches and updates. So if you see this error after one of these drops, don't be surprised. From what we've seen, the developers at Epic Games release new content daily, and sometimes the content they create contains bugs that bring the server down. Be patient! You'll be back on the BattleBus in no time.
