The composition Protector / Mystic from Teamfight Tactics is one of the strongest to play if you get your hands on a Spatula, but it's much weaker without it. As a result, it's mostly a composition to pivot to in the mid or late game.

The Protector / Mystic comp
This composition is based on a rather simple principle: Aurelion Sol becomes extremely tanky when changed to Protective, since he throws his ultimate very regularly and has a lot of HP. As a result, it saves a lot of time in Urgot, which ends fights by chaining ultimates and killing all opponents one by one, while the other units all aim to control opponents or buy time during the fight. This composition is especially recommended when you have access to a Spatula quickly in the game, although it is possible to play it without.
When to Play This Comp and Victory Conditions
This composition is particularly situational, it is certainly not recommended to play it every game, but rather if:
- You get a Spatula quickly to make Protector's Breastplate : if after round 3-7 you still haven't had a Spatula, it is better to rotate.
- You have found a Urgot or a Aurelion Sol at level 7 and you have good objects for one or the other.
If you are aiming for top 1 in a game, you will usually need to meet the following criteria:
- Aurelion Sol Protector and Urgot levels 2 with good things.
- Le 9 level to ideally add Janna, or switch to 4 Celestial Beings.

The most important object for this composition is the Protector's Breastplate. It is this item that allows Aurelion Sol to become extremely tanky, gaining a very large shield every few seconds. Since this shield is based on max HP, a Warmog Armor also works very well with.
With 4 Mystics, it is above all the physical carries that are likely to worry Aurelion Sol, which is why bramble armor will usually be the best third item to shield him from crits. It can also work with magic power items, like Rabadon's Headdress, Echo of Luden, or morellonomicon ou Ion Spark if you don't have them on another champion. |

If the objects of Aurelion Sol are primordial, Urgot will however be your real carry in this composition. The Lance de Shojin is essential to allow him to cast his ultimate regularly, while the Ultra-fast cannon allows you to set him back to target the opposing backline one at a time. You will usually need a defensive item for Urgot, like Mercury, Gripper trap or even Guardian angel.
Instead of a high-speed Cannon, you can do a Ouragan de Runaan so that it generates twice the bonus mana of the Spear of Shojin. Same, if you don't have a Spear of Shojin, a blue buff will also do the trick (although less efficient). |

To survive mid-game, you will usually need a transition carry. If the objects of neeko / Rakan are not as important as the others, having a morellonomicon and Ion Spark is always very interesting. neeko will usually be the best user of these items, especially if she has a Guardian angel to cast his ultimate multiple times and tank opponents.
They can also simply use Thief's Gloves if you have a lot of Training gloves. |
Spatula and other objects
If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a Spatula more than that for the Protector's Breastplate, you can make a celestial orb to get 4 Celestial Beings playing Xin Zhao instead of neeko. Another option is to change Cassiopeia en Guardian of the stars so that she gives a lot of mana to her allies with neeko et SorakaOr Janna level 9.
At the level of your other components, you can always make “passe-partout” objects on one of your Protectorsas an Redemption, Shroud of Calming or even Portail de Zz'Rot for example. A Lance de Shojin on the fact Lulu can also be very interesting.
Course of the game
There are two options when playing Protectors : you can slow roll in order to try to pass Xin Zhao, Rakan et Jarvan levels 3 using them as carries, which is especially recommended if you don't have Spatula for Aurelion Sol. Otherwise, you'd better play for the level 8 fast in order to find your legendaries.
Early game (levels 3/4/5)
Generally, an indicator that should direct you towards this composition is the fact of finding several copies of Protectors very early in the game, especially if you have a Giant's Belt or two to go with it. Ideally, you'll want to find Xin Zhao niveau 2 quickly, this one then serving you as carrier of objects for Aurelion Sol (Warmog Armor et bramble armor). It should allow you to have a winning streak without difficulty if you play it with Rakan et Jarvan IV.
In the early game, you shouldn't buy experience unless you're on a winning streak and want to protect it. It will often be interesting to try to get to 50 gold at the earliest. To levels 4/5, ideally you want to play 4 Protectors by adding neeko, or play Rakan + Xin Zhao et 2 Celestial Beings (Ashe et xayah) or 2 Mystics (Bard, Cassiopeia ou Karma). In this second case, you can use Bard with objects of Urgot ( Lance de Shojin, Ultra-fast cannon) so that it generates experience for you. Cassiopeia can also use them.
Another option will be deliberately losing at the start of the game in order to have the priority during the second and third carousels, increasing your chances of getting a Spatula if there has. If you're too weak to make a winning streak, make sure to make a losing streak to still have a good economy.
Midgame (levels 6/7)
Logically, you should pass level 6 in round 3-2 or 3-4, depending on your winning streak and if you have Bard to give you experience. Ideally, you'll want to play 4 Protectors et 2 Mystics at this stage. You will usually have a decision to make: either vYou already have one Spatula, in which case you should keep buying experience to apply a "fast 8" strategy and get to level 8 quickly.

Si you don't have a Spatula, then you can still play for level 8, but then you should keep a transition option so as not to be too weak if you cannot change Aurelion Sol en Protective. In this situation, the Wizards could be an interesting transition, especially when using a Super Mecha who can benefit from the defensive objects of Xin Zhao and Mercury for example.
Finally, one last option if you don't have a Spatula but you already have lots of copies of your Protectors and nobody else plays them : you can slow roll while remaining level 6 and using your excess gold (above 50 gold) to roll each round. Your objective will then be to unlock Jarvan IV, Xin Zhao et Rakan levels 3, with neeko et Cassiopeia as an additional option.

Endgame (level 8+)
If you have decided to slow roll, your level 8 should come very late in the game since you want to have your units level 3 before you start buying XP again. However, if you play Fast 8, you would logically want to pass level 8 in round 4-3. At this point you should roll to get at least one copy of Aurelion Sol and Urgot, and sell your transition units (Bard, Xin Zhao) to transfer your items to your new carries. Then you want to play 4 Protectors et 4 Mystics, Or 6 Protectors et 2 Mystics if you don't deal a lot of magic damage.
You usually won't have enough gold to find your legendary units levels 2, so it's best to start saving again once you've stabilized. If you have Aurelion Ground Protector et Urgot, you should be strong enough to fetch the 9 level and increase your chances of upgrading them. If you lose too much HP, you should save up to round 5-1 and roll your gold in order to try to find at least one of the two units at level 2. Eventually, you will still want to pass 9 level. as round 6-1 at the latest.
When you will be 9 level, you will have different options. The best will be in the majority of your parts to add Janna, which will give you 3 Star Guardians if you play neeko et Soraka. It also offers good boosts to your units and interesting area control. Another option is to add Ashe with Xin Zhao, Rakan et Lulu to get 4 Celestial Beings.
Finally, it is also possible to play Thresh if you have good units on your bench, especially others Urgot so that he brings them and you can execute all the opposing champions quickly.
Different possible transitions
As said above, it is recommended to keep a transition option if you did not find a Spatula at the start of the game, so as not to find yourself too weak at the end of the game if you have Fast 8.

Finally, an interesting transition if you have Mecha Pilots and no Spatula is to leave Mecha/Sorcerer, with Viktor who benefits from Lance de Shojin, your Wick with bramble armor et Warmog Armor, and Xerath for the Ultra-fast cannon et Mercury. At last, Gangplank works great with objects from neeko ( Guardian angel, morellonomicon, Ion Spark). It is also possible to use Riven in main tank.

Positioning Tips
One of the important points to pay attention to for your positioning is Urgot : he always targets the enemy champion farthest from him in his attack range, which is normally 3 cells but makes the whole board with a Ultra-fast cannon. Therefore, try to position opposite to opposing carries, and it's better to put it on the second line if you don't have a super fast Cannon to target the opposing backline.
Avoid putting Aurelion Sol in the front line despite being your main tank: the longer he stays alive, the more mana he will drain with his ultimate and the more he can cast his spell regularly and be tanky. Accordingly, prioritize your other Protectors in the front line, especially if one of them has a Guardian angel.
